Ohara Koson
Ohara Koson was born in Kanazawa in 1877 and is considered one of the great printmakers of the 20th century, most famous for his prints of birds & flowers (kacho-e). Around 1900 he became a teacher at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts where he met Ernest Fenollosa, an American professor and great advocate of traditional Japanese art. Photography went down in popularity with the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War and war prints became fashionable. Koson earned a good living from creating these war prints, but birds and flowers always remained his first love. Professor Fenollosa encouraged him to create kacho-e mostly for the Western market. They became a wonderful success in Europe and the United States.
